It's a bit dated, but I think the function in newer revisions are much the same. We did a little instruction manual on how to properly run SECURITY ERASE using Parted Magic, if you're interested. Filling the drive as you did makes recovering any old data very, very unlikely, but as the manufacturer, we wouldn't "guarantee" that, unless you do a SANITIZE. In the case of your Crucial SSD, it's very roughly 15%. I don't believe the SSD have different cells to store another 240GB of data.Even a consumer-grade drive will have some extra space which the drive uses to manage background operations. I was under the assumption that SSD's always write to different cells and are never overwritten, even in a format situation.īut I already write 240GB of data (full SSD space) with mkv videos. So, beyond some very technical forensic means to recovery old deleted data, it's pretty darned unlikely that someone will be able to recover data from that SSD.
However, this operation does not take precedence over new data writes from the host, so it's not really certain when the physical erase operations will take place. As the drive sees that it's necessary to erase old data in order to have space ready for new data, it will do so. This lets the drive know that it's okay to start erasing these blocks, and so the drive will. What this does is tell the drive that the entire user space contains what's known as "invalid" data. In Windows 7 and newer, when you create a new partition on your drive, the OS automatically issues a full-drive TRIM command. However, what you have already done is probably enough, especially given that you believe you don't have any sensitive data on the drive. It's always difficult to get information from powerpoint slides without narration, but hopefully this will help. I did a presentation on this topic at the 2016 Flash Memory Summit. DOD-approved overwrite processes are for HDD only. SSDs and HDDs definitely do not behave the same way in this respect. DO NOT OVERWRITE YOUR DATA as you would with an HDD. as with SANITIZE, this will only take a minute or so (actually much less on a 240GB SSD). Your Crucial SSD will also support the ATA Security Erase command. Our Storage Executive software Opens a new window has a SANITIZE function, and it takes only a minute or so to completely wipe the drive. If you are concerned, I'd go ahead and wipe the drive.
